Food irradiation is a safe and modern technology used worldwide to preserve food and improve safety. It uses controlled energy from gamma rays, electron beams, or X-rays to destroy harmful bacteria, pests, and insects — without affecting the quality, taste, or nutrition of the food

• Sources and Types of Rays

• Food irradiation is done using safe and approved energy sources:

• Cobalt-60 → Gamma rays (1.17 & 1.33 MeV)

• Cesium-137 → Gamma rays (0.66 MeV)

• Electron Beam → High-energy electrons (up to 10 MeV)

• X-Rays → X-rays (up to 5 MeV)
